HUMAN GIVENS

Humans are born with both physical and emotional needs. They are what motivate us, what help us to feel safe, connected with others, and what help us to survive.

If our physical needs (air, food, water, sleep) are not met, we will die.

If our emotional needs (security, attention, control, privacy, intimacy, friendship, a sense of accomplishment, for example) are not met in a balanced way, this can lead to mental health problems.

By meeting both our physical and emotional needs sufficiently, we are able to survive and develop.

We also have natural in-built resources to help meet these needs, such as memories, imagination, emotions, instinct, and an ability to empathise and relate to others.
